Andy Griffith lived most of his childhood here in Mount Airy. The town of Mayberry is where Americas popular '60s hit TV series was filmed and enjoyed by millions. Take a stroll down the Historic Main Street and let it set you back in time. Stop off for a bite to eat at the famous Snappy Lunch and dive into one if their famous Pork Chop Signature Sandwiches. Fans of Andy Griffith from around the globe can visit Floyd's City Barber Shop, Opie's Candy Store, Wally's Service Station, Mayberry Soda Fountain, Mayberry Courthouse, the Old City Jail, Snappy Lunch, Andy's childhood home, the Andy Griffith Playhouse, Andy Griffith Collection and even take a ride in a Squad Car Tour.
Mount Airy has something for everyone of all ages. Pilot Mountain -
Pilot Mountain stands more than 1400 feet above the beautiful and picturesque countryside of the upper Piedmont plateau. In 1976 it was made a National Natural Landmark and the peak is the centerpiece of Pilot Mountain State Park.
Whilst there, take the opportunity to treat yourself to a horseback ride through the natural landscaped woods or take on the river from raft or canoe. The two sections of the mountain are joined by a six mile woodland corridor, each section offering great outdoor fun. The mountain segment, which includes the two pinnacles, contains most of the facilities. The primitive river section centers around the lazy, meandering Yadkin River.
Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia -
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a noncommercial motor route established in 1936 and administered by the U.S. National Park Service, extending for 469 miles through the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia and North Carolina. Following along mountain crests (elevations varying from 600 to 6,000 ft); it links the Shenandoah National Park (north) with the Great Smokey National Mountain Park (south) and probes the George Washington, Jefferson, and Pisgah national forests. It traverses colorful mountain scenery with facilities for outdoor recreation camping, hiking, and picnicking on route.
NASCAR -
A Short drive away in Mooresville is the one of the most visited shops in NASCAR history. It is home to Dale Earnhardt Inc. You can visit there free throughout the year. View the DEI cars in the huge workshop, buy merchandise of your favorite driver and take home the memory of a legacy.
Charlotte City -
A Two hour drive from Mount airy is home of the second largest financial center in the USA. Known as the queen's city, Charlotte as lots of night clubs and wine bars, including Dale Jnr's Whiskey River bar, Ri-Ras Irish pub where a great traditional Irish lunch or dinner is served and why not shoot some pool in the many sports bars and explore all the great and memorable pleasures it has to offer.
